The Supreme court has ordered that the examinations be conducted as per the UGC circular, stating that college and university cannot award degrees to students without conducting final year examinations.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) sent a circular on July 6 last year asking universities across the country to conduct final year exams by September 30.
The states of Delhi, Orissa, Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh have canceled the exams, despite the UGC stating that it will not be able to award degrees to students without conducting final year exams.
Petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking the cancellation of the final year exams in view of the Corona disaster and the cancellation of the UGC circular. In this case, the UGC accepted the arguments and delivered a three-judge bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan.
The judges, who said they could not award degrees without holding final year exams, ruled that the UGC circular would go through. Judges, meanwhile, said states have the power to postpone exams under the Disaster Management Act, adding that if state governments consider postponing exams after September 30, they can consult with the UGC and decide on new exam dates.
