Born in the village of Kondampet to SP Sambamurthy and Shakuntalamma.
SP Balasubramaniam learned to play the harmonium and flute at an early age due to his interest in music.
At the behest of his father he joined the college in Anantapur for an engineering degree. Halfway through his studies there, he joined SPB, an engineering course at a college in Chennai, where he enthusiastically participated in concerts.
In 1964, he participated in a concert organized by the Telugu Cultural Institute with amateur singers and won the first prize.
In the 1966 Telugu film Sri Sri Sri Mariyatha Ramana, SPB sang the first song in Kothandapani's music. Next in Tamil SPB The first song sung was featured in the yet-to-be-released film Hotel Ramba.
SPB holds the Guinness World Record for singing 40,000 songs in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
In 1981, Kannada composer Upendrakumar set a record by singing 21 new songs in 12 hours.
Similarly, he has sung 19 songs in Tamil and 16 songs in 6 hours in Hindi.
SP Balasubramaniam sings the National Award winning record for the first song sung in Hindi in the film Ekduje Galiye.
SPB, who has won 6 national awards from Sankaraparanam to Electric Dream, has received the Andhra Pradesh Nandi Award 25 times and the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Government awards many times.
The Central Government has honored him with the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards for his achievements and service in screen music.

Balasubramaniam is not only a singer but also an all-rounder in music, background voice, actor, film production and stage concert.
SPB has provided background voice in only 120 Telugu films for Kamal Haasan.

SP Balasubramaniam, who is romantically married, has a wife Savitri, a son SP Charan and a daughter Pallavi. S.P., who has performed all over the world and entertained the world with his songs.
Balasubramaniam was admitted to a private hospital for treatment of corona a few weeks ago while he was resting at home.
At the age of 74, SPB passed away on 25 sep 2020 at private hospital MGM in Chennai.
