What is a blue moon?

The first thing to understand about the Blue Moon is that it does not actually appear blue because the dust and smoke particles in the Earth's atmosphere are the reason it appears blue. NASA explains that these particles must be more than 900 nanometers wide to affect the scattering of red light in the sky, resulting in the moon appearing blue.

Blue Moon is an event in which two full moons appear in the same month. When this happens, the second moon to appear in that month will be called the Blue Moon.

Typically, this occurs when there are 31 days in a month. However, it is likely to occur in a month with only 30 days, as it did on June 30, 2007. Generally, 12 full moons occur in a year. But when a blue moon event occurs, 13 full moons occur in a year.

If the sky is clear with low pollution, the blue moon is clearly visible in the sky.
