The Chennai Meteorological Department said that the storm that will form in the Bay of Bengal will cross the border between Karaikal and Mamallapuram near Puducherry on Wednesday.
The Meteorological Department said the deep depression in the south-western and south-eastern Bay of Bengal was moving in a north-westerly direction at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour.
As of 8:30 am today, it was 550 km southeast of Pondicherry and 590 km southeast of Chennai.
It is expected to develop into a hurricane in the next 24 hours and then cross the coast between Karaikal and Mamallapuram near Pondicherry on Wednesday afternoon with a gust of 110 kmph.
Heavy rains with thunderstorms are expected in one or two places in the delta districts today due to the formation of a storm in the Bay of Bengal. Tamil Nadu has forecast thundershowers in Pondicherry from tomorrow till Thursday and heavy showers are likely in some places tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.
A red alert has been issued for heavy rains in some parts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry on Wednesday.
Fishermen have been warned not to go to sea as strong winds are expected in the Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar and coastal areas of Tamil Nadu from today to Wednesday.
Kanyakumari district received 2 cm of rain in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am today.
Fishermen do not go fishing in Pondicherry today as the wind speed is increasing and the sea waves are raging. More than 500 boats are stranded in the port of Tengkaittu and more than a thousand boats in eight towns, including Chinna Veerampattinam Nallavadu.
A consultative meeting of all departmental officers on storm precautionary measures was held at the Disaster Management Center in Pondicherry.
