Nivar storm is likely to intensify into a severe storm in the next 24 hours

The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has formed into a hurricane. It will become a severe storm in the next 24 hours and will cross the coast between Mamallapuram and Karaikal near Pondicherry tomorrow evening, the Meteorological Department said.
The deep depression, in the southwestern Bay of Bengal, moved in a west-northwesterly direction at a speed of 5 km per hour and strengthened into a hurricane.
As of this morning, it is 450 km southeast of Chennai and 410 km east-southeast of Pondicherry.
Nivar storm is likely to intensify into a severe storm in the next 24 hours. May move west-northwest for the next 12 hours.
A severe storm is likely to cross the coast between coastal Tamil Nadu-Pondicherry and between Karaikal and Mamallapuram near Pondicherry tomorrow evening.
At that time the storm will blow at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour. Due to this, there will be widespread thundershowers in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Karaikal till the 26th.
Pudukkottai, Tanjore, Thiruvarur, Karaikal, Nagai, Cuddalore, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts will receive intermittent showers today.
Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Pondicherry, Villupuram, Thiruvannamalai, Chengalpattu, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Karaikal districts will receive heavy rain tomorrow.
