The rain started at 12 midnight in Chennai and continued during the day.
Chennai Meteorological Center Director Puviarasan said that the rains will continue in the coming days.
He said light to moderate rain is likely at many places in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry on January 7 and 8.
He said that on the 9th there would be heavy rain in one or two places in southern Tamil Nadu and light to moderate rain in other districts.
The weather in Chennai will be cloudy for the next two days and light to moderate rain is likely in many parts of the city, Puviarasan said.
