Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy has declared Thaipusam a public holiday

The Chief Minister has declared January 28 as a public holiday and ordered that the day be added to the list of public holidays.

Thaipusam, the auspicious day for Lord Murugan, is an annual festival celebrated in the month of January on the auspicious day when the star and the full moon meet. Also known as the birthday of Lord Murugan, special pujas are held at the temples of Lord Murugan.

Events such as taking Kavadi, taking a jug of milk and giving alms are held regularly at the Murugan temples. The Thaipusam festival is celebrated not only in Tamil Nadu, but also in the states of Kerala, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius and Indonesia.

The Chief Minister has declared the Thaipusam Festival, which will be celebrated on the 28th, as a public holiday, in view of the public demand for a public holiday for the Thaipusam Festival in Tamil Nadu as well as in Sri Lanka and Mauritius. 

The Chief Minister has also ordered to add Thaipusam Day to the list of public holidays in the coming years.
