This blog describes the biography of the late former President Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee. 

Born on December 11, 1935 in West Bengal, Pranab Mukherjee studied politics, history and law.


Pranab Mukherjee began his career as a teacher, journalist and lawyer and served as a Member of Parliament for the States in 1969, 1975, 1981, 1993 and 1999. Pranab Mukherjee contested and lost the 1980 Lok Sabha elections for the first time.


Twenty-four years later, he contested and won the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Pranab Mukherjee, 47, took over as Finance Minister in 1982 in the cabinet of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and became the country's youngest Finance Minister.


Pranab Mukherjee left the Congress after the assassination of Indira Gandhi and started a separate party, the Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress.


3 years later, he was again united in Congress. He took over as Vice-Chairman of the Planning Commission, and in 1995 served as the country's Foreign Minister and Chairman of the SAARC Council of Ministers.


He was appointed Minister of Defense in the United Progressive Alliance government in 2004 and later became Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 2009, he was re-appointed as the country's finance minister.


Pranab Mukherjee won the 2012 presidential election and became the 13th President of the country. Pranab Mukherjee, who has written more than 5 books, was recently awarded the country's highest Bharat Ratna in 2019.
